A luxury hotel experience

With a little help from Certikin, Cheshire Pool Services re-creates the ‘luxury hotel experience’…

…it was a request that topped the customer’s wish list, along with the pool being a model of efficiency. Given the brief, Cheshire Pool Services turned to its tried and trusted supplier Certikin, secure in the knowledge that it could amply satisfy the owner’s expectations.

“The owner had recently returned from holiday,” explains Cheshire Pool Services’ Chris Shore. “Of course, like all of us, he wished that he was back relaxing by the hotel pool. Naturally, life can’t be one long holiday, but he did the next best thing, called and instructed us to, as far as possible, replicate the hotel experience at home. A keen swimmer, he required a pool long enough to complete lengths.”

Without further ado, the Warrington-based pool dealer set about constructing this beautiful 15m x 2.4m lap pool (with a constant depth of 1.2m) within the confines of a spacious, glass pool hall, an extension of the main house. Some nine months later, the job was finished and the pool up and running.

“With rising energy costs, the customer requested the most energy efficient equipment,” says Chris. “To that end, we ensured the pool’s shell was fully insulated and installed a Roldeck slatted automatic pool cover.”

The Roldeck is the ultimate in heat insulation, significantly reducing the amount of evaporation, it offers staggering energy savings of up to 70 per cent. Scoring high on durability and stylish good looks, the Roldeck is ideal for new and existing pools, and has a wide variety of installation options to choose from. Each Roldeck is made to measure, with the coiling mechanism installed above or below ground or in the pool itself. High-spec features include a touch pad switch and remote control for easy calibration and operation and a safety lock. Powered by a 24 volt in-roller motor system (negating the need for a separate motor pit) – a high pressure motor vessel filled with nitrogen, features Formula 1 shock absorber seal technology, a built-in pressure sensor and a concealed stainless-steel motor driven spindle

“The Roldeck is a great piece of kit that combines well with the Smart Pool system to provide complete automation of the pool,” adds Chris.

Smart Pool delivers the ultimate integrated experience in automated control of pool equipment and operational processes. This versatile system can be tailored to individual needs, providing effortless maintenance and complete peace of mind. It can be operated from a mobile, tablet or PC and has the option of an additional touch screen on the ‘central control hub’.

With a nod to energy efficiency, heating and environmental control of the pool hall is taken care of in the summer thanks to a Calorex Air Source Heat Pump. Inverter heat pump technology allows for efficient control of the pool temperature with the I-PAC/V-PAC only using what energy is needed when it is required. High efficiency with modulating step-less inverter compressor gives an average COP of 10.3 (I-PAC+), 9.7 (I-PAC) and 10.7 (V-PAC), which is twice as efficient as the older on/off models.

Complying with the new F-Gas regulations in Europe, the heat pumps use the low Global Warming Potential (GWP) refrigerant R32. It requires less refrigerant volume per kW and is easier to recycle. The heat pumps are of a compact size with a small footprint and compliant with permitted development rights. The I-PAC is made from aluminium alloy and the V-PAC from ABS.

The pool is also fitted with a Calorex Delta for use outside of the summer months. It is the ultimate environmental control system, designed to take full control of the whole indoor environment and pool water heating. A comprehensive range, there’s a Delta to suit pools of every size. It comes with a two-year warranty and commissioning is included in the price.

Totally self-contained, the Delta removes moisture and recovers energy which is then re-used to heat the pool water and air. By utilising this method of heat recovery, energy costs are kept to a minimum. Typically, for every unit of power that a Calorex heat pump consumes, it will convert 2.4 times this amount to usable heat. The potential energy savings are huge. In fact, compared to traditional heating and ventilation methods, cost savings of over 50% are achievable while corresponding CO2 emissions can be dramatically reduced by as much as 70%.

“Cheshire Pool Services are big fans of Certikin’s stainless steel fittings and PU2 coloured lights and they often feature in our installations,” says Chris. “They look good and stand the test of time.” Other Certikin equipment installed on this pool includes stainless steel treadsteps, Flolux fittings, Aquaspeed pump, Certikin Plant Room Shield, Quantum UV and Hyrdroswim deep bed filter.

“Certikin have supported Cheshire Pool Services from the moment we entered the water leisure industry three years ago. Our recent nomination for the prestigious Pool Contractor of the Year at the upcoming UK Pool & Spa Awards has helped to reinforce our position as a UK leading pool dealer, and is something we are extremely proud of considering we were a small start-up business at the beginning. We have a strong partnership with Certikin, and the company has been integral to the success of our business. Its customer service is incomparable and that, in turn, helps us provide the best service to our customers.”

Certikin puts the palace into Buckingham!

Warwickshire-based Buckingham Pools is no stranger to dealing with high-end water leisure projects. During its 50 plus years of trading, it has been at the centre of design and installation of some of the country’s most prestigious award-winning swimming pool, spa and wellness suites. With its unrivalled pool expertise and technical excellence, it provides turnkey Design and Build services which is second to none. Relying on the supply of quality, high-performance equipment, Buckingham Pools uses Certikin International as one of its primary suppliers.

Detailed below are two luxurious domestic installations that illustrate this partnership’s efficacy and the broad range of products and systems supplied by Certikin.

Coverstar is the star attraction

Buckingham Pools were involved from concept to conception with this beautiful swimming pool at a country house in the heart of Warwickshire. The residential 10m x 5.5m, 1.30m deep outdoor pool resides in an expansive verdant landscape, creating an elegant statement.

Adorning the pool is a Certikin-supplied Coverstar safety cover – a seamlessly integrated cover system, which is super-easy to operate and provides maximum safety without compromising the pool’s appearance. The multi-use built-in bench area incorporating non-slip entry steps makes for a well-equipped pool for serious swimming and entertainment.

The Coverstar system is truly the best a pool can get! Based on the strength and supporting the weight of children, pets and even adults, it uses the top quality Ultra Guard III vinyl composite, rather than the industry-standard vinyl, popular with other manufacturers. The high level of UV resistance offered by Ultra Guard III considerably reduces the level of colour fading compared to standard vinyl, plus it has high resistance to chlorine, acid, ozone and other pool chemicals. Furthermore, instead of using sewn webbing (which often proves to be the weak area of the cover), Coverstar uses an exclusive patented process to heat seal the webbing, prolonging the cover’s life and improving the overall quality operation. Independent tests show this process is more than twice as strong as competitors’ webbing sewn to the cover. The heat-sealed webbing is also colour matched to the fabric to create a beautiful finish – an important feature given Buckingham Pools’ attention to detail.

Fluvo adds the X factor

Buckingham Pools also implemented a similar Design and Build programme for this private manor house in the heart of Worcestershire. The 13.8x 4.5m swimming pool is at the heart of its stunning health and wellness relaxation area.

Adding another dimension to the pool, Certikin supplied a Fluvo Rondo counter-current system with a remote control to provide flexible performance and activity levels.

In both this and the aforementioned installation, Certikin has supplied the majority of the plant room equipment, including pumps, filters and dosing equipment.

The CertiChem team are happy to help with all things dosing and continue to offer free onsite surveys, without obligation, outlining the equipment options for any given application. The team can quote complete system packages, which means that when an order is delivered, you will receive a pallet containing everything required for the installation to be completed in one hit. Dosing pumps, tanks, bunds, tubing, sheathing, saddle clamps, you name it, Certikin can include it! Quotations include a full standard system and special prices for recommended accessories such as eyewash stations, PPE and testing equipment, and there are deals on start-up chemicals and delivery to site.

The team at Buckingham Pools agree, “For years, Buckingham Pools have relied on Certikin, our first choice for quality pool equipment that lasts. Their fantastic range of heating and ventilation, pool parts, and pool essential products has consistently been our go-to for the longevity of our commercial and residential builds. For safety as our top priority at Buckingham Pools, we use Coverstar pool covers for their durable and easy-to-use mechanisms, also approved by our clients.”

The charm is in the detail

Surrounded by water on all four sides, this unique, stunning house on Hayling Island on the Hampshire south coast demanded an equally eye-catching swimming pool. Simplex Pools set about the task of designing and building a pool befitting its surroundings and from its solar cover to its LED lights and HDPE grating, the finished article has the Certikin hallmark stamped through it.

When keen sailors Kate and John bought a plot of land on Hayling Island, their first task was to demolish the original dwelling to make space for a larger bespoke property on the plot that would fulfil their wishes for a forever home.

The house is built on a small headland jutting out into Chichester Harbour. Because of the risk of floods from high tides the new house had to be raised above sea level. The house complete, Kate and John were looking for a swimming pool that they could exercise in and provide an entertainment area for family and friends.

They instructed Simplex Pools, a family run company based on Hayling Island, to design a 12m x 5m concrete tiled overflow pool. After consulting with structural engineers and local builders, the above-ground pool was constructed so that it appears from the house as an in-ground pool. It affords them beautiful views of the harbour.

Simplex Pools MD, Gareth Lancaster takes up the story. “This project has taken two and a half years from design to completion, although the actual construction of the pool took only a little over three months. Because of the above-ground aspect of this pool, we knew we were tasked with building something state of the art and special. It took us outside of our comfort zone, but through hard work and research we have created a bespoke pool that both ourselves and our clients are really proud of.”

It’s the attention to detail that helps contribute to this pool’s presence. The pool’s smart finish is enhanced by Certikin’s cream coloured high density polyethylene overflow grating (HDPE). This is ideal for new builds or for refurbishing pools that are beginning to look like they’ve seen better days and in need of a make-over. It looks good and offers high impact strength. Certikin can manufacture the grating in any depth, width and virtually any colour and other bespoke items can be made to match such as manhole covers, drain covers, inlet covers and steam diffusers.

The pool is fitted with Certikin’s GeoBubble solar cover. As it is a very exposed site, the cover was made with elastic straps so the wind can’t get under it. An investment in a Certikin solar blanket pays dividends in terms of the payback it offers from solar gain, heat retention and the fact that it acts as a highly effective water loss barrier. Traditional bubble cover materials use a circular cylindrical bubble design but research shows that this design offers multiple weak points which can be prone to premature failure in the harsh environment of a swimming pool. The GeoBubble extrusion combats the attack of UV and pool chemicals. Sharp corners which in standard covers are an area of high stress are, in the GeoBubble,  replaced by a smoother, more uniform shape and a 50 per cent thicker material.

The pool features Certikin’s Quick Change PU6 U/W LED lights which are a revolution in underwater light design and offer numerous benefits for the pool builder and customer alike. The lamp holder has no screws, nuts or bolts and is held in place with a threaded ring on a new purpose-made gasket. This means that no tools are needed to change the bulb, thus reducing the bulb changing time. Environmentally friendly, thanks to its long life (up to 100,000 hours) and high energy efficiency (uses 90 per cent less power than a traditional lighting system). It comes in a white LED light; a colour change light and an ultra-bright LED for commercial pools that require greater light intensity and better power efficiency than a standard unit.

Other Certikin equipment includes a Calorex Pro-Pac 22 heat pump, white fittings, pipework, a Vision filter and  Euroswim suction pump.

Team work makes the dream work

Each pool refurbishment is different, with the occasional one presenting a real challenge, but the Certikin technical team are on hand to give advice and help you work around the problem. This on-site lining case study by David Hillier Pools is a case in point.

“The client contacted me towards the end of spring,” explains David Hillier. “He wanted some advice as his pool’s existing liner was torn and in need of replacement. He also wanted some steps building to make entering the pool easier.”

David went into consultation with Certikin’s Liners & Covers Division Product Manager, Craig Williamson, before drawing up a design. David and his team then set about the pool’s refurbishment.

The original pool was an above-ground steel framed pool with a one-piece liner and was half in ground with suspended decking and a raised edge to conceal what was beneath. This was stripped out and discarded as unusable.

After removing the sand underneath the pool, a 150mm concrete base with 100x100mm posts set into the floor was found to be good enough to reuse. Between each of the posts a 100mm Celotex insulation was installed, along with a cold bridge across the posts, all enclosed with a 18mm water resistant ply for structural strength and water resistance. A section between two of the posts was removed, the ballast behind the retaining timber removed and a concrete floor installed ready for hand-cut wooden steps to be made and installed, reinforced and surrounded with Celotex. An inlet and outlet were constructed, the floor levelled, liner track installed and the floor and wall void sealed up.

On what turned out to be the hottest two days of the year, the Certikin on-site liner team then moved in to work their magic, installing a new underlay and an onsite liner. It just left the decking to be replaced on the top of the upright and the pool to be filled with water and hey presto! It was ready to receive its first swimmers.

David adds: “It was certainly an interesting and challenging project, with all trades putting their heads   together to achieve an aesthetically pleasing result. It’s not perfect, there are elements I’d do differently next time. Most importantly, however, the client is absolutely delighted and now in possession of a durable, very usable pool which meets his needs. Thank you Certikin’s on-site lining team for bringing the project home!”

The beauty of on-site lining

It’s quick and efficient and gives a tailor made, heavy-duty liner that is second to none. Here are some important questions answered

On average, how long does it take to site line a pool?

Timing varies with size and complexity, but generally it’s four working days for an average sized domestic hopper pool with steps.

How soon after lining can the pool be used?

Immediately!  There is no curing or standing period.  As soon as the lining is complete, the pool can be filled and used’

What kind of pools are the most suitable for site lining?

Site lining is a very versatile option for both new and old pools of domestic and commercial size.  It can accommodate complex shapes, steps, ledges, pits etc.  One key element to remember though is that any pool fittings need to be liner fittings so if the pool is not an existing liner pool some conversion is required.  If conversion is not possible, the provision of purpose made HDPE clamping plates may be possible.

What are its advantages over other refurbishment options?

As a commercial grade material the longevity of the product when compared to thinner linings or paints (it comes with a 15 year pro rata warranty) is a major advantage.  The process is generally quick but, as we complete the full installation, it also means that the pool trader can still earn on other projects while we are working on their behalf.  The range of colours and patterns mean that a tile effect can be re-created and areas of contrasting colour (such as racing lines) can easily be added at what is usually a fraction of the price of a fully tiled pool.

How does it compare in terms of cost?

A site lining falls between cheaper options such as paint and thinner, bag style, liners and more expensive options such as tiling or spray applied products, so it is often seen as excellent value for money as the materials used are both attractive and varied in colour and pattern, but also extremely durable and versatile.

How long does site lining last for?

The general warranty is 15 years, but the life expectancy can be double this in a well maintained pool.  Water balance is critical and an even temperature of around 28-32 deg C is ideal.  The lining really has two functions – retaining water and looking good.  As the life of the liner progresses it will very probably remain an excellent water retainer, but looks will suffer if the lining and its environment are not monitored and controlled.

How many different colours and finishes are there?

At present our core range has 11 pattern options, 8 natural texture options and 9 solid colour options.  Each can be combined with a contrasting or complementary anti-slip material for steps and slopes (many of which are an exact match to the main pool pattern).
