Picture Perfect

“A swimming pool designed first and foremost for family use that will complement and not detract from the garden,” was the brief Gareth Gibbs of Wicken gave to Cambridgeshire pool builders Aqualeaf.

“We have four children under 12 years of age who all love the water,” explains Gareth. “We felt the family fun that a swimming pool would create whilst they are growing up would be priceless and create some great memories.

“When we met the team from Aqualeaf we were really impressed and immediately felt we could trust them with our project. We wanted a medium sized, outdoor, heated pool that had some shallow areas along the sides for the young ones to play but had a clear length-wise section for us to do lengths if we wanted to have races against each other. We were braced for a very costly project but we had our needs more than met and for less money than we had anticipated.”

“We completed the 9.5m x 4.5m x 1.4m deep liner pool in just seven weeks,” says MD of Aqualeaf, Paul Carman. Any hiccups along the way? “There was a soak away built at the back of the house by the previous owners when they extended it, that we were unaware of. Unfortunately, because the pool was built in the middle of January, we had some small issues with water from the house making the plaster and pool sides damp during construction which slowed the project down a bit, however, we soon got on top of the problem.”

Aqualeaf are loyal customers of Certikin and at the start of each project they turn to the UK’s number one supplier and manufacturer of wet leisure equipment with a shopping list of products. They are particularly fond of using Calorex for their H&V needs – indeed this project features a Calorex Pro-Pac 16 Heat Pump.

The pool also features Certikin’s ground-breaking OC-1 Filtration Media. The British manufactured OC-1 media is tearing up the textbook on traditional methods of entrapment filtration. OC-1 works through settlement and cleverly harnesses advances in pump technology and variable speed pumps/controllers to make massive energy savings. Using OC-1 media also reduces the head loss in the filtration system as it has more than 20 times the capacity to retain debris. This means that the designed flow rate is maintained even when the filter becomes dirty. Maintenance costs are also reduced as less backwashing is required, wasting less heated and treated water. All this whilst maintaining filtration performance standards.

Delighted with the end product, Gareth adds: “Realistically, we’ll use the pool from April through to September and probably daily during the holidays and when the weather is hot. If the kids had their way, they’d be breaking the ice to get in during winter! We are so happy with the way the pool has turned out. We are all just so excited for the air temperature to rise a bit so we can take the baby and younger ones in for a bit of a longer splash! I would absolutely recommend one!”

The safety cover with a starring role

When early this spring the Hampshire pool retailer, Neptune pools were called out to valet a  pool and hot tub that they had installed last year, it gave them a chance to admire their handiwork. The family were celebrating their daughter’s sixth birthday with a pool party for family and friends and Neptune were on hand with an early morning call out to ensure it was in tip top condition for the celebrations.

There can be fewer facilities that can be added to a house for bringing a family together and creating a focus for family entertainment for all ages than a swimming pool.

Lee Campbell, MD of Neptune says: “This pool sums up for me just how much fun a family pool can offer by the provision of its shared experience. I was proud of our work, not only does the swimming pool look fantastic, but it does what it sets out to achieve and the Coverstar safety cover ensures that it is a totally safe environment when the pool is not in use.”

With two young children, safety was naturally top of the Murphy’s priority list and without hesitation Lee said: “It has to be a Coverstar then.” Lee took the clients round to view several of his existing clients’ pools complete with Coverstars and the decision was quickly made.

Work started on the 4.50m x 10.0m rectangular pool with a flat bottom profile and 1.40m water depth in June. It was constructed from standard concrete blocks with 100mm insulation to the walls and floor and finished with 50mm floor screed and 30mm wall rendering. Large corner steps were incorporated into the design to allow easy access in and out of the pool. Standard Certikin flow and return fittings were installed with 63mm flexi pipework to allow for 6hr turnover rate as the pool was to get heavy use in the summer months.

Plant was selected and included an Aquaspeed pump, Vision filter with glass media, Calorex ProPac 22X heat pump and Rainbow chlorine feeder and standard Certikin electrical controller.

The pool has in wall tracks for the pit mounted Coverstar to keep the overall look smart and clean.

The pool copings and surround needed to compliment the house and existing garden so the Murphys chose Cotswold mint sandstone from the Cranbourne stone collection and Neptune incorporated a stainless steel deck channel to remove excess water as the clients wanted to include a raised deck area adjacent to the house.

Millboard decking was chosen due to its versatility and anti-slip qualities and Neptune incorporated a bull nosed edging to the front edges. The pool and stone surround were completed by early August so the family could use their new pool, whilst Neptune continued working on the large raised deck area, which was completed in under four  weeks.

To add another dimension to the project the family chose a Caldera Geneva hot tub with a white pearl shell and slate grey cabinet which is, we hear, now Dad Norman’s favourite resting place!

Lee adds: “We chose Certikin as our first point of call as having used your equipment before, we know it is reliable and excellent quality. The staff are always friendly and can answer any questions we or the client may have. The project was a high-end installation so the client rightly expects the works and materials to match their expectations .Certikin, as our number one port of call, can be relied upon to deliver exactly what the client requires, along with with reliable back up should it be required.”

The star of all covers

Coverstar is the UK’s number one safety cover and comes with the added bonus that it can save up to 70 per cent on heating and chemical costs. It is supported by Certikin’s dedicated technical sales team who provide quotations and answer technical queries.

Coverstar is supplied with under coping, flush or top track and can either be pit (with optional pit lids available, including composite decking, flat lids or trays) or deck mounted.

Unlike other safety cover suppliers which use an industry standard vinyl, Coverstar features a far superior vinyl composite, in a range of colours.  Whereas most safety cover suppliers use sewn webbing, (which often proves to be the weak area and results in premature failure), the manufacturer has invented and patented the heat-sealed process, which prolongs the life of the cover and improves the overall operation.  This is colour matched to the Coverstar fabric to provide an aesthetically pleasing finish.

The new low profile leading edge bar (which can be exposed or fabric wrapped), creates an attractive finish. Furthermore, there is an option to hide the leading edge, again, creating an aesthetically pleasing finish.

The system is based on strength and this is echoed in the Eclipse Mechanism, which is manufactured with almost all stainless-steel components.

The sliders (traditionally the weakest part of the cover) are four times as strong as any other slider used in the industry.  Furthermore, the pulley diameter is 2”, providing five times the load bearing capacity of commonly used pulleys.

Such is the manufacturer’s confidence in the product that the cover’s mechanism comes with a 20-year limited warranty.

The new UK sourced power pack has an auto bypass valve protection and is supported by UK service and warranty.

Certikin has a team of factory-trained engineers to carry out installations, repair work and servicing.  They can also make pre-installation site visits to ensure the site is suitable to accept a Coverstar. However, for those wishing to use their own engineers, Certikin can offer initial training on-site for your engineers including full installation and trouble-shooting

Certikin’s Fast Show

What do you do when space is limited but you love swimming and want a pool for exercising? You call in Certikin and install a serious bit of kit called the Fastlane.

Kay Cunningham from Staffordshire based, West Midlands Swimming Pools takes up the story: “We were approached by a family who were looking at installing a pool largely for exercise and sports purposes. They had previously tried out an Endless Pool and although they found the counter current unit exactly what they wanted, they felt the off-the-shelf pool was too shallow for their purposes and didn’t have quite the finish they were looking for.  The solution was to design a bespoke pool for them with the addition of a Fastlane counter current unit.

The Fastlane unit from Certikin is the Rolls Royce of counter current units and is designed for athletes and serious swimmers as well as lesser mortals wishing to get the most out of their swimming pool.

Having the benefit of remote control, the speed can be altered, with an optional LED display allowing monitoring of swimmers progress and speeds. There is also the option of the Fit@Home app, available for both iOS and Android devices., which gives the ability to monitor, tailor and repeat training programmes.

“The existing building, which was being used as a home office, lent itself perfectly to accommodate a 5m x 2.5m pool with a constant depth of 1.6m and adequate deck space,” adds Kay. “We took the concrete floor up and a hole was excavated. Taking advice from Certikin on the asymmetrical requirements of steps into the pool, we came up with the featured design, which not only works in accommodating the Fastlane counter current unit but also provides a practical way of entering the pool without encroaching too much into the 5m pool length.”

Kay says: “The customer was absolutely delighted with how the pool fits into the space and highly rates the Fastlane’s performance.”

Featuring the following Certikin equipment, the pool is very much stamped with the company’s hallmark:

Flow fittings including skimmer, 2 inlets, 2 low level suction points.

Certikin pool lighting

Elecro 30kW titanium heat exchanger linked to gas boiler, which also provides warm air heating via Monitair 75 unit with LPHW.

0.75hp Swimflo pump and 18” high rate sand filter

Insulated blockwork and render construction with 1.5mm onsite Persia blue mosaic lining.

 Life in the Fast Lane

What sets the Fastlane apart from other units is that the turbulence-free water stream is wider than the swimmer’s body and deeper than any swim stroke, yet it is narrow enough not to impinge on other swimmers. Unlike jetted alternatives, the Fastlane generates a wide block of crystal clear, bubble- free and completely adjustable water flow, delivering the fastest, smoothest swim current (a necessity for any serious swimmer) available in any swimming machine.

Whether training to be an Olympic swimmer or simply swimming for the joy of it, a Fastlane turns a swimming pool into a health club. Athletes love the adjustable speed swim current and, for those in training mode, it comes with an optional 6inch high visibility digital LED display.  Children love it too because it’s plain fun!  It’s current is adjustable between 4.04 minutes and 1:14 per 100m pace.

The Fastlane has two parts: a remotely located hydraulic power unit that supplies hydraulic fluid to the swim unit in the pool. The current is controlled by a remote control or the Fit@Home app.  Simple hydraulics means that no electricity is required poolside.

It’s suitable for almost any pool – free form or rectangular: gunite, vinyl or fibreglass; new construction or retrofit. The required minimum water depth is 0.9m. It’s particularly suitable for small swimming pools as it lets you swim for as long as you like without turning.

The award-winning pool that’s fully-loaded with Certikin equipment

Essex-based Centurion Leisure were recently awarded a Bronze at the wet leisure industry’s equivalent of the Oscars – the 2019 British Pool & Hot Tub Awards. The purpose-built pool for the SwimMania swimming school in Laindon, Basildon won Bronze in the much-coveted Special Requirement Pool of the Year category.

George Clifton, Centurion’s MD says: “We were delighted to receive this award. It represents an acknowledgement of our continued commitment to achieving the highest standards of design and construction. We always strive to ensure our clients are thrilled with our work and to receive recognition from our industry peers is particularly gratifying.”

George explains that the pool had some design constraints as it had to fit within the envelope of an existing building. “We were only allowed to excavate down 900mm so had to be mindful of the height out of ground to meet with the client’s water depth requirements. In addition, we had to allow for the minimum area around the pool to comply with Sport England’s criteria.”

The 14m by 4.80m freeboard concrete pool, featuring a constant depth of 1.10m, had to meet the demands of a weekly bathing load of approximately 800 people and operate at 32.5 deg C. This is achieved by the addition of a Calorex Delta 10 3-Phase environmental control unit. This, plus the highly efficient, no-fuss CertiDos dosing system means the pool is very low maintenance.

The key advantage of continuous monitoring and control is simply just that – key water parameters are monitored continuously, 24/7, resulting in improved safety from a residual sanitiser perspective. The focus on safety extended into the plant room at Swim Mania. The CertiDos dosing system is fully contained within a lockable GRP enclosure minimising risk to the operators. The chemical selection and tank and bund arrangement were also carefully considered so as to meet with Health and Safety guidance. The CertiDos team also showed great flexibility and were able to mobilise an engineer to be on-site to install, commission and train all within a tight timeframe.

Centurion selected the two Alpine Plus 1200 diameter filters pre-loaded with OC-1 media to obtain high standards of filtration coupled with the ease of installation with a pre-loaded filter. The feedback of performance from swimming teachers, the owner and the pool’s users has been nothing but positive.

Certikin’s Commercial Manager, Steve Nelson, says: “OC-1 represents the greatest advance in swimming pool filtration in the 21st century. Unlike traditional entrapment methods, British manufactured OC-1 works through settlement and harnesses advances in pump technology and variable speed pumps/controllers. Reduced energy and water consumption (thus less chemicals and heating) coupled with 20 times greater debris collection compared to sand or glass, makes it the filtration of choice. It is light to handle, easy to install, low in maintenance and has a typical payback of just 12 months.”

George adds: “I am very impressed with how OC-1 filtration has transformed the working of this pool. I am amazed at just how efficiently it works and the results it achieves. I think it justifies the title of a revolutionary product.”

OC-1 makes waves Down Under

Yes, Certikin’s ground-breaking new filtration media OC-1 has reached Australia where, with its high ratio of pools to population, it has received a great reception.   The highly popular Willoughby Leisure Centre, located on the lower North Shore of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, is a wonderful example of how OC-1 is revolutionising swimming pool filtration not just here in the UK but all over the world. Read on to discover how it is helping the Centre save more than $14,000 and 1 million litres of water per year.

Opened in 1990, Willoughby’s sporting and recreation facilities are well used, hosting more than 540,000 visitors each year. Last year, work got underway to introduce a number of upgrades with the aim of giving the much-loved centre a make-over and reduce its environmental footprint.

As with any large leisure centre, the Willoughby has a high demand for gas, electricity and water. In order to lose a few tonnes of CO2from its carbon footprint the Centre is currently undertaking the following sustainability exercises: OC-1 filtration system, efficient lighting, hot water pump, rainwater harvesting, solar heat water, UV water filtration system and co-generation system.

Combined, these energy conservation measures offer a carbon saving of over 900 tonnes of CO– saving enough coal to fill up the centre’s swimming pool.

Certikin is proud that its OC-1 is playing an integral part in the centre’s ecological refurbishment. In the first project of its kind in Australia, Astral Pool (Part of Fluidra with Certikin) supplied the ground-breaking media and engineering contractors Roejen NSW set about its installation.

The plastic filtration system uses settlement rather than the traditional entrapment method to more efficiently remove micro particles from water. In addition to keeping the heated spa and pool water clean and fresh, the new system provides savings in water, chemicals, heat loss and electricity, resulting in less downtime and an overall improved experience for patrons.

The manager of the Willoughby Leisure Centre reports: “Water quality has improved through a  25% increase in turnover of the pool water, or about 18 extra turnovers each day. Pump speeds were able to be reduced from 50Hz to 42Hz, saving 70,000 kW/hour per annum or about $14,000 a year. Clients are reporting that the water feels better. This is from people who don’t know the filter media has changed!”

Certikin’s OC-1 revolution gathers momentum

Since Certikin announced its worldwide exclusive distributorship of the ground-breaking OC-1 three years ago, the filter media has acquired a growing fan base and is now being used and tested in over 40 countries worldwide where it is fast becoming the filtration media of choice. As the pool market moves increasingly towards energy efficient ‘green’ products, OC-1 fits perfectly into this trend.

Certikin’s British manufactured OC-1 filter media is tearing up the textbook on traditional methods of entrapment filtration. In contrast, OC-1 works through settlement and cleverly harnesses advances in pump technology and variable speed pumps/controllers to make massive energy savings.

By replacing commonly used media (such as sand and glass) with OC-1 it is possible to reduce the head loss in the filtration system; filter with a constant flow (regardless of debris entrapment) and significantly reduce running energy costs whilst still filtering to the equivalent standard as it can be used with a smaller pump or a variable speed pump or controller. OC-1 filtration media is suitable for use on all pools and spas, be they domestic, commercial or hydrotherapy.

It is easy to convert an existing sand filter for use with OC-1 with a simple lateral modification. Further details of the conversion can be found at  www.oc-1filtrationmedia.com

Certikin’s Commercial and International Manager, Steve Nelson says: ‘”OC-1 is a change in mind set. Since the launch of OC-1, we have had superb feedback and have new installations and the upgrading of existing sand filters every week. The advantages for the installers are beginning to be fully appreciated.”

Why OC-1 is the filter of choice

Reduces energy consumption – OC-1 maintains constant flow rates, even when the media becomes dirty. No downtime is required for heating/salt chlorinators/heat pumps going out on low flow. The constant flow means pumps can be run at lower speeds, thus saving energy.

Huge capacity for debris collection – OC-1 offers over 20 times the capacity of sand or glass.

Reduced requirement for backwashing and a more efficient backwash – Reduces water consumption, chemical usage and heating.

Lightweight – Can even be shipped inside a filter, easy to handle and super quick and easy to install.

Less Maintenance – lasts longer than sand, reduces pressure in the system, extending the life of equipment.

Filters to International swimming pool standards.

Suitable for ALL installations – domestic or commercial, outdoor or indoor, new installations or existing filters.

Recyclable at end of product life.

Payback typically 12 months.

Special filters

Two filters, specifically designed to work in perfect harmony with OC-1 media for both domestic and commercial installations, are available. The Commercial version can be supplied complete with the OC-1 media already preloaded and allows quicker installation and avoids having to load sand or glass into the tanks on site.  The Domestic version comes ready for the media to be installed and is easy to ship and quick to install.  The OC-1 Filter range covers all applications from small domestic to the largest commercial installations.

Perfect for Export

“OC-1 is super lightweight – a benefit particularly appreciated by the export market,” says Steve Nelson, Certikin Commercial and International Manager.  “It is now possible to ship filters around the world with the media already inside. This saves transportation costs and also time and effort on site. The benefits of using OC-1 are enormous, it truly is a revolutionary product.”

Maintenance and Training Best Practices

Smooth Operator

Most would agree that maintenance and operator training are crucial to the smooth running of any wet leisure facility.

Limited communication among staff at large facilities, high employee turnover rates – particularly at seasonal facilities – and multiple responsibilities assigned to the same person (i.e. building maintenance, landscaping and pool care) at small facilities may go some way to explaining the limited awareness towards maintenance and training that is regularly witnessed throughout the industry.

Ensuring the safety of the general public as well as maintaining a good reputation, makes it worth investing in these areas.

So, in order to better ensure that pool’s run efficiently and safely, facilities need to make maintenance and training a year round / on-going process. By segmenting the pool season into three parts – pre season, in-season and post-season – sites can better manage the process of maintenance and training.

Pre Season

Check all electrical and plumbing systems

✓ Servicing and maintenance: Arrange servicing and maintenance for equipment via service providers/manufacturers

✓ Annual training: Couple servicing and maintenance visits with refresher training for cost effectiveness. Many service providers and / or manufacturers will offer some kind of on-site training

✓ Consider sending at least one key member of staff to have more in-depth training, such as attending a Pool Plant Operators course

✓ Review risk assessments, method statements and operating procedures to identify further areas for training

In-Season

✓ Inspect all equipment weekly, if not daily, to ensure it is running correctly, is clean and there are no leaks

✓ At least once a month, do a quick review with staff on equipment operation

✓ Test the pool / spa water before use and every 2-3 hours thereafter. Manual test readings should be checked against chemical controller readings and recorded

✓ Ensure staff are adhering to water testing guidance and that testing equipment is properly cleaned and maintained

✓ Keep the pool / spa’s log in a specified location and stress the importance of keeping meticulous records

✓ Regularly check and maintain PPE equipment

Post-Season

✓ Where necessary disassemble equipment, clean it and store appropriately

✓ Invite service providers / manufacturers to site to decommission equipment correctly

✓ Prepare for next season. Attend any training sessions and stay informed on industry guidance

These steps are intended as a basic overview of maintenance practices and do not include all necessary operator actions, which may vary by recreational water facility. Facilities should contact their chemical or equipment supplier or manufacturer for more comprehensive information. As a bare minimum, on-site operators should familiarise themselves with industry guidance and training courses.

Short of water? Certikin has the solution

For those areas of the UK threatened with the imposition of a hosepipe ban, Certikin has a low cost, simple, lasting solution …in the form of the ingenious OC-1 filtration media. Its reduced requirement for backwashing and a more efficient backwash means that water consumption is greatly reduced, along with chemical usage and heating.

Introduced two years ago, the filter media is fast becoming the filtration media of choice as the pool market moves increasingly towards energy efficient ‘green’ products; OC-1 fits perfectly into this trend.

OC-1 filter media is 80% free area (compared to sand or glass media which is about 5%). This means that water passes through the filter bed with ease, reducing the pressure in the system and dropping the head as well. It filters to the same standards as sand or glass but with a much bigger debris capacity, meaning you can go longer between backwashing.

Certikin’s Commercial Manager, Steve Nelson says: “They say every cloud has a silver lining and this summer’s potential drought situation is an excellent opportunity to switch to OC-1. Since its launch, we have had superb feedback and have new installations and the upgrading of existing sand filters every week.”

More reasons why you should switch to OC-1

Reduces energy consumption – OC-1 maintains constant flow rates, even when the media becomes dirty. No downtime is required for heating/salt chlorinators/heat pumps going out on low flow. The constant flow means pumps can be run at lower speeds, thus saving energy.

Huge capacity for debris collection – OC-1 offers over 20 times the capacity of sand or glass.

Lightweight – Can even be shipped inside a filter, easy to handle and super quick and easy to install.

Less Maintenance – lasts longer than sand, reduces pressure in the system,
extending the life of equipment.

Filters to International swimming pool standards.

Suitable for ALL installations – domestic or commercial, outdoor or indoor, new installations or existing filters.

Recyclable at end of product life.
