Roldeck:
Decked out in style and substance

“A Roldeck is like a well-maintained roof – a sound investment”

There’s only one way to top off a beautiful pool in style and that is a Roldeck slatted cover…its appearance is as classy as its components are functional. These two installations by Cambridge-based Elm Leisure illustrate that the Roldeck is as much at home indoors as it is outdoors.

“The initial plan was for the creation of a simple, environmentally friendly concrete pool,” explains MD of Elm Leisure, Ben Monks. “By the second meeting, however, the project had become slightly more sophisticated with the addition of an infinity edge.”

Some 14 months later the stunning pool, complete with infinity edge and walk-in steps to one side, was up and running. Adorning it is a Roldeck with aluminium looking PC60 polycarbonate slats which emerge out of a hidden pit.

“For me, the Roldeck ticks all the boxes. The Roldexk is the ultimate in heat insulation, evaporation control, durability and aesthetic appearance. In this case its heat retention properties, when combined with a Calorex heat pump for summer use, was spot on in meeting the client’s requirement for both style and efficiency.” says MD of Elm Leisure, Ben Monks.

“The Roldeck’s smart mechanism means it glides effortlessly over the pool”

With space at a premium, Elm Leisure chose a Roldeck Easy cover for this pool. The Easy cover, with its two slim and discreet end stands, is ideal if space is limited.

Jo Catterall, Auto Covers Sales Manager, says: “The Easy cover is very competitively priced eg a 4m x 8m with white PVC slats retails at just £6,000 plus delivery and VAT. At that price, it could be sold as a small add-on to any new or existing pool project. There’s an electronic and a solar powered version.”

Ben says: “We cast our own concrete spa using all Certikin spa jets and six blower Venturi air jets and air switches and used a handmade Cranbourne marble surround to match the pool.”

The owners were keen to ensure that the new pool hall was in-keeping with their solar and air sourced heated house. The pool is thus fully insulated using the Hexatherm Xpool insulation. “It’s ideal as it gives thermal performance calcs (u value of 0.25) which allows the pool to meet Part L of the Building regs. It also keeps the structural engineers happy as the insulation is load bearing,” says Ben.

A Calorex Variheat Series III model 600 was chosen, in addition to air source heat pump interconnected with buffer tank 200 Litre with 3kW immersion heater which combined, provides the customer with low energy heating.

The New AQBox
overcomes difficult access

Difficult access prompted Pembrokeshire-based Pegasus Pools to consider installing its first AQBox enclosure for this pool owner in Milford Haven. Impressed by the enclosure’s ease and speed of installation, Pegasus is now recommending the product to other customers looking for an affordable and simple solution to covering their pool.

“Looking to extend the swimming season, the owner was keen to cover his pool but the property’s narrow access precluded the installation of a conventional enclosure,” says MD of Pegasus, Steve Bamford.  “I then thought about the AQBox which, as its name suggests, arrives in a box. We dismantled it prior to delivery and carried it in pieces round to the back garden.”

Manufactured by leading enclosure specialists, Aquacomet and supplied by Certikin International, the attractive AQBox enclosure comes in a low and standard height offering three different lengths for each and two different glazes.

The eye-catching enclosure offers a high specification, which includes a patented child safe locking system; 6mm double wall polycarbonate or 3mm SAN solid, UV protected on both sides. The enclosure parts are made of rounded anodized aluminium alloy with clear or thermo glazing.

The low level enclosure comes with removable front and back walls, both delivered in one piece, with side mounted sliding doors whilst the standard enclosures feature a front wall, including a French door in the middle and a removable end wall.

Steve adds: “The owner was delighted with it and he is intending to use it all year round. The property is surrounded by trees so the enclosure is ideal for keeping leaf debris out.

“I was impressed with its quality. I have only ever been involved in Aquacomet enclosures so I wouldn’t look elsewhere. Fortunately, there were no hitches and the installation was completed in just a day and a half. The instructions were straightforward and certainly within the grasp of a competent handyman. Had the customer opted for a bespoke model, it would have been much more expensive and this more than met his requirements. We will certainly be looking at installing more in the future.”

Thinking out of the box

The flat low level enclosure is available in 0.7m height by 6.7 length; 0.8m height and 8.7m length and 1.05m height by 10.7m length whilst a standard enclosure is available in the same lengths and the following heights – 1.12m, 1.43m and 1.79m heights.

Aquacomet
weather-proofs your pool!

The south coast of England undeniably gets more hours of sunshine than the rest of the British Isles but it is still subject to the vicissitude of an unpredictable climate. So for Brighton pool owner, Mark Jackman who wants to get the most out of his new swimming pool, installing a Certikin Aquacomet enclosure, with all its flexible options, was a no-brainer.

“The pool was high maintenance and the wind often made it unpleasant when swimming,” says Mr Jackman. “Using it outside of the summer months was totally out of the question and it was an eyesore. Heating was expensive and it was constantly filled with leaves and other garden debris. Giles Leisure introduced me to the Certikin/Aquacomet pool enclosures, which seemed the perfect solution. After a couple of site visits I chose a fixed enclosure with one section tailored so it would exactly fit the desired area.”

The enclosure the Jackman’s chose is ingenious in design because all the sides (except the aluminium legs) can be lifted up, neatly folding away into the roof making the pool open to the elements. Fixed load bearing profiles are installed every 2 metres, while the doors are made of transparent, solid polycarbonate. In this way, the enclosure can be opened up to a height of 2.1 m along both sides. Alternatively, the pool can be opened up for ventilation by opening only the upper parts, maintaining a childproof barrier around the pool.

The installation was carried out by Ultimate Atm Solutions whose MD, Phillip Osborne says: “Surrounded on two sides by a garden brick wall, Mark Jackman’s pool was not a straightforward installation because of the working space constraints. We knew that fixing one end to the customer’s existing brick wall, which was very uneven, would be crucial as it would govern the rest of the levels for the enclosure. The customer had marble slabs, which we had to core out with diamond drill bits before we could drill for our fixings. This was time consuming but necessary so as not to crack the slabs. The project took three days to complete using a three-man team.”

Mark says: “I could not be more delighted with the result. The attachment to the back garden wall and the way it has been sealed surpassed my expectations. We can swim all year if we wish and maintenance has been massively reduced. Apart from scooping off the odd bug there is little else to do. Sitting in the enclosure is as pleasant as swimming. The garden looks so much more inviting now. The necessary filtration time is much reduced. If I close all the windows, the greenhouse effect takes the enclosure up to 40 degrees C even in April on a sunny day. I expect my heating costs in the summer to be negligible. Furthermore, it is both child and pet safe. You can simply lock the sliding doors. There are no draughts and swimming is a pleasure. I recommend a pool enclosure as the perfect home swimming solution.”

Mark adds: “As well as relaying my pleasure with the enclosure itself, I want to convey how impressed I was by Phillip and his two colleagues who erected the enclosure. They were pleasant, professional and worked ceaselessly. I enjoyed having them here and I cannot be more pleased with the enclosure and the service I received.”

Alex Howell from Giles Leisure says: “When the client approached me his remit was for an economically priced, quality pool enclosure that would increase his swimming season. The reason I chose Aquacomet was primarily down to the superior build quality, but equally important was the professional service provided by Fiona Denley in the Certikin office, keeping me informed on progress right through from the original enquiry to satisfactory completion. This support and technical back-up is so important to busy pool retailers.”

Aquacomet Pool Enclosures from Certikin

Every possible permutation is catered for, including low level, high level, lean to, fixed and sliding options.

The Orion is another stunning range that offers telescopic opening and closing without railings through the use of an extremely strong yet visually light-appearing structure.

The metal of the Endless Summer structure can be ordered in white (RAL 9010) or moss green (RAL 6005), which are the standard design colours. Wood pattern or other RAL coded surface treatments are available as other options. The roof surface of the enclosure is made of double wall polycarbonate while the side doors and wall endings are made of transparent polycarbonate sheet.

The enclosures are suitable for many applications (both commercial and domestic) and not just swimming pools and spas – indeed they can offer an outside “living” room for any use.

The easy to handle sliding doors can be locked so that the enclosure is not accessible to children.

Certikin offers a free site survey. Installation is optional to give full peace of mind, or supply only and guidance provided should it be preferred.

Great grating:
the best a pool can get

Just as well-cut edges maketh a mown lawn, so all smart self-respecting swimming pools cry out to be trimmed with Certikin’s beautiful high density polyethylene grating (HDPE)… as this beautiful new swimming pool at the Old Swan & Minster Mill Hotel in Oxfordshire so graphically illustrates.

Located just 15 miles from Oxford, the Old Swan & Minster Mill is nestled in 65 acres of idyllic grounds in the picturesque village of Minster Lovell. This quintessentially English inn has recently been seen the addition of the Garden Spa – a tranquil haven which includes an indoor heated plunge pool, rock sauna and aroma steam room.

The architect, Michael Pilkington appointed Oxfordshire pool builders, Clearwater Pools, to construct the 9m x 4m pool. It was quite a task as all works had to be completed within a 20 week timeframe but Clearwater more than stepped up to the plate with the final result being this stunning tiled pool surrounded by Certikin’s HDPE grating.

Clearwater Pools, who have been constructing both private and commercial swimming pools for over 40 years, chose the high quality grating because of its eye catching good looks and high impact strength. It can be made to suit any existing or new grating channel and it comes in any depth, any width and virtually any colour.  Certikin can also manufacture bespoke items from HDPE such as manhole covers, drain covers, inlet covers and steam diffusers.

Certikin’s HDPE has proved a massive success story thanks to the company investing in the impressively named and sizeable Maxi-m5 2030 twin head, twin ATC precision CNC Router at Certikin’s HQ in Witney, Oxfordshire. This mega machine allows for a high manufacturing output and fantastic product versatility.

Tim Wilson, Certikin’s Operations Director says: “We have a range of 16 different tools to choose from and each tool is ingeniously and automatically selected by the machine’s computer, facilitating very complex machining. It’s this which makes it the best in the marketplace.”

How To Turn Your
Pool Green

So you want your pool to be GREEN?  Are you sure?  Well that is fairly easily achieved by forgetting to check the water or add chlorine and algicide and letting the green algae grow – and it’s even easier to achieve this after a rainstorm!

OK, so by ‘GREEN’ what we really mean is ‘environmentally friendly’.  You can run your swimming pool as efficiently as possible in order to save water and reduce energy use and therefore saving you money!  Here are a three ideas to help you to reduce your pool running costs:

ONE:  Cover your pool with a Sol+Guard Certikin Solar Blanket.  A solar blanket is a necessity when it comes to operating a pool in the UK.  By offering solar gain, heat retention and a water loss barrier, a good quality and well-made bubble cover will provide years of service and save money far beyond its original cost in a short period of time.  Covers with a translucent colouring will allow maximum solar penetration, whereas covers with a reflective underside will increase heat retention.

TWO:  Use OC-1 Filtration Media in your swimming pool filter.  OC-1 is an innovative filtration media made in the UK that replaces sand or glass as your filtration media in the swimming pool filter.  With OC-1 it is possible to achieve a greater flow of water through the filter which means that pump speeds can be reduced by around 20% giving impressive energy savings.  OC-1 also saves water as its huge debris retention capacity means that the filter can go much longer without a backwash1 and without increasing the pressure or decreasing the flow rate. Existing filters can be converted for use with OC-1 or for new builds a dedicated OC-1 filter is available.

THREE:  Heat your pool with a Calorex Heat Pump.  Heat pumps are recognised as the most sustainable way to dynamically heat swimming pool water and with a Calorex heat pump you will save both energy and operating costs. Calorex Pro-Pac heat pumps are designed and engineered for the UK climate with models to suit all seasons from Summer right through to all year round use, which of course are ideal for indoor pools too! Calorex heat pumps can save up to 75% for both operating costs and carbon savings against direct electric heaters, and up to 47% operating cost saving against fossil fuel boilers and up to 60% carbon saving against fossil fuel boilers (based on UK energy costs). 2

A Calorex heat pump could also be used alongside a Certikin Genie gas heater which is 94% efficient (a much higher efficiency rating than other swimming pool gas heaters) and will quickly heat up the pool while the heat pump economically keeps the pool at the desired temperature.

Your local swimming pool expert will be best placed to advise you on which green products you could incorporate into your own swimming pool – why not contact them to find out more on how you can reduce your swimming pool running costs.

¹NOTE: The levels of Total Dissolved Solids and Cyanuric Acid (a chlorine stabiliser used in outdoor pools) should be monitored due to the reduction in the addition of fresh water when reducing backwashing frequency.  Sanitisers such as calcium hypochlorite and sodium hypochorite do not contain cyanuric acid and could be used as an alternative to di-chlor granules or tri-chlor tablets if cyanuric acid stabiliser levels are higher than desired.

Pool maintenance:
Choose the easy life!

When the sun shows its face this summer, if you’re like us, you will want to be out there enjoying your pool rather than wondering how to get it all nice and clean and the water safe to swim in before it starts to rain (again).

You have two main options for maintenance.  The first and certainly the easiest route is to call in the experts.  Get in touch with your local swimming pool company and book regular service and maintenance visits.  Obviously there will be a cost involved in getting someone else to look after your pool, but if you don’t want to get your hands dirty or need reassurance that you are doing the right things when it comes to maintaining your pool then building a good relationship with your local pool experts is definitely the best place to start.

The second option is to do it yourself!  If this is your choice, then here are some ideas on how to make looking after your pool a pleasure and not a chore.

Cover your pool when not in use. A cover will help to stop the leaves and debris from entering the water.  There are many options available from a solar blanket and manual reel system to a powered Roldeck slatted cover system (pictured above) that moves on and off the pool at the touch of a button – or where safety is a concern then a Coverstar safety cover really comes into its own.  Whichever type of cover you choose, preventing leaves and debris from getting into the water means that there is less work for you to do.  Many covers will also reduce heat loss from the water surface so minimising heating costs.

Get a Dolphin! No, not an actual dolphin, we mean a Dolphin automatic pool cleaner!  These pool robots are simply placed into the swimming pool and they clean the pool for you.  The Dolphin learns the size and shape of your pool and ensures that every part of it is cleaned.  Some also come with a remote control allowing you to direct the Dolphin to the exact part of the pool that you want it to clean.  All you have to do is lift it from the pool at the end of its cleaning cycle and empty the filter bags when needed.

Automate your chemical dosing. As a pool owner you’ll know that you need to test the water at least once a week and add sanitising chemicals such as chlorine to keep your pool water clean, clear and safe to swim in and the pH balanced so that the sanitiser does the best job and the equipment on your pool is protected.  Did you know that you can automate the addition of these chemicals with chlorine feeders and controllers?  Another option would be to generate your own chlorine on site by installing an Autopilot salt chlorinator.  Alternatively you could install a Blue Lagoon UV system or a Prozone ozonator to help reduce the amount of sanitiser needed.  There are many options here, and whether they are suitable for you will depend on your needs and your pool – your local pool experts will be able to help you to choose what would work best for you.

Perhaps the most important thing to remember if you want an easy life is that prevention is definitely better than cure – so whether you are doing it yourself, or with the help of your local pool experts, keep on top of pool maintenance and check your pool regularly so that you can really enjoy your pool this summer.

Using swimming pools
during a hosepipe ban

What is a Hosepipe ban?

A Temporary Use Ban (TUB) – also widely known as a Hosepipe Ban – is designed to restrict the use of water to manage demand during times of drought in the UK.   One of the categories of water use that may be prohibited during a TUB is ‘filling or maintaining a domestic swimming or paddling pool’.

However, although domestic swimming pools and swimspas are affected by this legislation, there are some exemptions under a Temporary Use Ban.  HOT TUBS; NEWLY BUILT SWIMMING POOLS AND SWIMSPAS; AND MAJORLY REFURBISHED SWIMMING POOLS AND SWIMSPAS ARE NOT TREATED AS FALLING WITHIN THE DOMESTIC SWIMMING POOL/PADDLING POOL PROHIBITION.

During a Temporary Use Ban you CAN:

• Fill or maintain a pool or swimspa where necessary in the course of its construction. Newly built swimming pools or swimspas can be filled with water.

• Fill or maintain a pool or swimspa during the course of major refurbishment. Major alterations to shape, size or to the immediate surroundings of the pool, repairs or significant leaks or the installation of a complete new liner would qualify in this category. Minor repairs or cosmetic renovation such as the replacement of tiles would not qualify.  Ideally the water from the pool to be refurbished or repaired should be retained in a temporary structure and reused if suitable.

• Backwash your swimming pool filter – however, you cannot replace water lost as a result of backwashing

• Fill or maintain a pool or swimspa using a hand-held container which is filled with water drawn from a tap.

• Fill or maintain a pool or swimspa that is designed, constructed or adapted for use in the course of a programme of medical treatment.

• Fill a hot tub – these are regarded as a bathing facility.

If the drought continues, then a water company may apply to DEFRA for a Drought Order which if applied enables the water company to take further water saving measures which may include non domestic swimming pools that are not open to the public.

Conserving Water when Running a Swimming Pool

Although the water in a swimming pool is continuously filtered, cleaned and re-used, there are areas where water losses can occur and we recommend that these should be addressed in order to conserve water.

Reduce evaporation.  Keep floating covers on the water surface whenever swimming has stopped to reduce evaporation.  This will also keep heat in the water, reducing your heating bills, and will help to minimise chemical costs.  The use of automatic pool covers such as Roldeck and Coverstar will also help to reduce evaporation.

Maintain lower pool water temperatures. This will reduce evaporation and minimise the effect of algae.  Heating costs will also be reduced.

Use OC-1 Filtration Media in your swimming pool filter.  OC-1’s huge debris retention capacity means that backwashing frequency can be reduced.¹

Install a Multicyclone.  A Multicyclone installed pre-filter will reduce the frequency of backwashing and therefore the amount of water sent to waste.¹

Stop splashing!  If pool users can reduce the amount of water splashed outside of the pool, then the amount of water lost to evaporation on the pool surround is reduced.

Consider installing rainwater harvesting tanks.  The water will need to be filtered and treated before it can be used in the pool.

If do you need to top up your swimming pool with water, then use a hand held container.  Alternatively, purchase water or hire a water bowser for quantities up to 2000 litres, or if large volumes of water are required then alternative water suppliers can be used to abstract water from an area unaffected by a ban and bring it via tanker to your pool.

Water and energy conservation for new build pools and refurbishments

When doing major refurbishment work, transfer the water from the pool into a holding tank and recycle it back into the pool when the work is complete.

For new pools, discuss the project requirements with the client and establish whether a shallower pool (1.5m) might be more appropriate.  Ensure that if diving is to be permitted the SPATA ‘cage of safety’ recommendations are followed.

Instead of a traditional swimming pool sand or glass filtration system, consider an OC-1 filtration system.  With OC-1, it is possible to achieve a greater flow of water through the filter which means that pump speeds can be reduced by around 20% giving impressive energy savings.  OC-1 also saves water as its huge debris retention capacity means that the filter can go much longer without a backwash¹ and without increasing the pressure or decreasing the flow rate.

Relax and enjoy your pool:
Use an Autopilot

If you prefer to relax and enjoy your pool rather than to maintain it then Autopilot is for you!  Autopilot’s industry leading salt water pool systems turn ordinary salt into a self-regenerating supply of pure chlorine for pool and spa water that’s clean, clear and luxuriously soft.

Why a salt chlorine generator?

Salt is a natural element found in the earth, in our body and in our homes. It is used to season and preserve our food, rinse out contact lenses and soften our drinking water. Salt is a very economical commodity. When the ions in salt are passed over specially coated blades and induced with a low voltage electrical charge it is converted into chlorine. It is the same process that is used to convert seawater into laundry bleach. When this process is incorporated into your swimming pool you have your very own “chlorine generator”.

Do I eliminate the need to add chemicals?

The Pool Pilot® does one thing, generate chlorine. However, the purity of this chlorine has less effect on the overall water chemistry balance, therefore, LESS chemicals are needed to re balance the water. Your Pool Pilot® recommends periodic (weekly or bi-weekly) testing of stabiliser levels (30 – 60 ppm, required in outdoor pools only), Free chlorine (2 – 4 ppm for pools and 3 – 6 ppm for spas), pH (7.2 – 7.6), and salt levels (2,500 – 3,500 ppm). Since we do not affect the Total Alkalinity or Calcium Hardness, a monthly check is sufficient.

How do I add salt?

What is most important when adding salt is to brush it around until it is dissolved. This is accelerated by turning your pump on, opening the bottom drain and adding the salt over the drain, rather than walking around the perimeter while adding the salt. It is recommended that you continue to run the pump for 24 hrs so the salt can spread evenly throughout the pool.  With Granular salt, 60-70% will have dissolved before hitting bottom. The remaining salt can simply be brushed into the drain which will then complete dissolution. With all other forms of salt, it will take longer to dissolve but the same process will accelerate the dissolve rate. Simply brush the salt in a pyramid over the drain to increase dissolution.

What kind of salt can I use?

Food grade salt is recommended.  This is available in 25kg sacks from your swimming pool supplier.

How much salt do I add?

Enough for 3,000 ppm (parts per million) as a starting point. So depending on the initial salt level of your water, you only add the amount needed to establish 3,000 ppm. For new pools or freshly filled pools, the salt level will most likely be zero.  In this case, 3kg of salt for every 1m³ of pool water will establish a level 3000ppm salt.

Are there any downsides to salt chlorination?

Be aware that other equipment on your pool may not be compatible with the levels of salt needed by your salt chlorinator as salt can corrode metallic products such as heating equipment.  Your pool service engineer will be able to advise whether or not the equipment on your pool is compatible with the 3000ppm salinity that is required in order for Autopilot to work effectively.

It should also be noted that the addition of salt to the pool water increases its conductivity and consequently when being installed on older pools a thorough check of the electrical installation, particularly earth bonding, is advised.  Further information can be found in the SPATA factsheet on salt chlorinators.

Why choose an Autopilot salt chlorinator?

AutoPilot® has been the technological leader in the chlorine generation process for swimming pools since 1978. There are over a half million satisfied AutoPilot®owners worldwide. AutoPilot® sets the standard for dependability, features and performance … and has a unit to fit every need and budget.
